Sauv Blanc is a bit tough for me, frequently tasting green or otherwise off, so I went to the higher end of the moderate price spectrum, and I really like this Justin SB. It seems that my maxim that good wine makers make good wine holds in this case, as Justin's Isosceles is considered something of a canonical mid-price bottle around SB.</div>

A few years ago, maybe 3ish, the Curtis Syrah was my definite favorite mid-price Syrah. I think it was sneaking just under $20 then. I remember introducing it to one of my wine mentors. I he remarked that it had what the French call "foot". I guess I'd call it soil. I get a really definite sense of place from this wine. So here's the 2011 version, a few years later, and it's clear that the winemakers have tried to stay true to this foot or soil sense. In fact, their label says, among other things, that this wine has "structure and a true sense of place". It's clocking in at $21 at Lazy Acres at this point, but I think this may prove, once again, to be my favorite middle of the price-road Syrah. It's a relief that something's stayed the same -- the last three years have been a real turmoil in every other sense!</div>

Our Club Awesome shipment from Muni was the '12 Bright Red, '13 Bright White and '13 Pale Pink. We loved them all, but the Bright Red actually had us sorta mumbling with happiness. My last shipment was wasted on folks who didn't appreciate it, and, actually, travelled in a very cold truck bed to get there, so it may have been ruined even before then. So it was nice to get back into a Muni wine that we really loved. This may be the first red we'll buy more of and bank for the next few years. The label says it should be good in the next ~7. We shall see...</div>

One of Lou's "Lou Likes" recommendations from Lazy Acres. Nevertheless, either Lou and I have different taste in Syrah, or I'm growing out of my Syrah rabies. It was good, paired with pasta and tomato meat sauce, but not exceptional. On the other hand, the bottle of wine was finished, between the two of us, well before we were out of pasta. So maybe that's your clue there...<br />
Not 100% on the year, btw, and I already chucked the bottle.</div>

One of the reds has blown me away. It's a regional dry red wine from the Peloponese, specifically from Monemvasia, which I visited as a tiny kid and fell in love with. The grape is the Agiorgitiko, i.e. St. George's grape. It set me back $17.50, and I would pay more if it cost more. It's very dry and has tons of soil and new oak flavors in it. Both Dan and I thought Chateuneuf du Pape, though we're not really up on our wines, so the association could be off. In any case, a phenomenal red!</div>Terroarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18109630926584464328noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9182261641154381041.post-69859533645775038152011-11-28T10:47:00.001-08:002011-11-28T10:47:46.494-08:00Holus Bolus 2008 Syrah<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Dan picked up this syrah, which is a bit more expensive than I would dare buy at $35, for Thanksgiving dinner this year. But they are not durable (one of the seams failed less than 6 months after buying them), they don't have enough pinky room for me, and I'm always worried about the possibility of breaking a toe. So I picked up a pair of Merrell Barefoot Trail Glove shoes (they're a men's model, but they fit me better than the women's) to replace them. These are now my all time favorite shoes of any kind and I'm finding myself wearing them not only in the outdoors (backpacking, hiking, sailing), as I'd planned, but around town and on trips, and also cycling. Indeed, the book did not disappoint, and I would highly recommend it to Abbey fans, National Forest fans and those interested in wilderness policy. The author waxes lyrical a bit more than Abbey, but doesn't go overboard, and the book is not so much gripping as engrossing -- it creates its atmosphere nicely and if that's what you're looking for at the moment, you'll go back to it.<br />
<br />
I started reading this a week after the Needles Lookout burned to the ground, which, in turn was a week after we visited it, though I had bought the book much earlier. </div>Terroarhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18109630926584464328noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9182261641154381041.post-10382468589865938762011-04-17T12:39:00.000-07:002011-04-17T12:39:47.427-07:00Three great reds<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">I've tasted three fantastic sub-$20 reds recently:<br />
